Title Silver Screen Fiend

Author Patton Oswalt

Year Published 2015

Kind of Book Humor/Memoir

How strongly I recommend it 8/10

My Impressions I could really relate to Oswalt's film addiction. For me it is books rather than film, but I think they stem from the same place; A desire to consume as a neurotic way to try to control the chaos of life. It's wild the stories our fearful mind tells ourself; "Once I see every great movie, THEN I can make a movie" "If I see every movie, then I will be prepared for life." The takeaway is that we need to spend less time engaging in other people's movies, books, art, ideas and more time working on our own contribution.

Practical Takeaways

  • Make the engine of your life, your life. Not other people’s movies, books, ideas etc.

  • Contribute to the art, don’t just talk about it, consume it, critique it

  • Spend the time criticizing others art writing your own art

  • Take what you need from (the movies) and get out of the dark once and awhile A: “you’re going to have more of the dark than you can handle sooner than you think. The thing about the dark is it can never get enough of you”

Big Ideas

  • People in their 20's act like overly serious senior citizens with little time to live
