Title A Windstorm in the Forest

Author John Muir

Kind of Book Essay/Nature

How strongly I recommend it 6/10

My Impressions

It really is incredible to me how differently different people react to the same stimuli. Most people, including myself, react to the start of a storm in the backcountry with fear and seek shelter and lower elevation. Muir on the other hand reacts with excitement and looks for the tallest tree he can find to climb and soak in the experience.

Big Ideas

  • People's journeys "there and back again" throughout their lives are similar to a tree swaying back and forth during a storm

  • Being out in the woods during a storm is hardly more dangerous than being inside under a roof

  • We can react to storms with fear or excitement
